How to Change Default Email Client in Firefox and Internet Explorer

I bet any of us have clicked on a hyperlink while browsing the web. If you think that these hyperlinks are only meant to redirect you to another website, you are completely wrong. Let’s take an example for easy understanding. Click here! What have you just noticed? Your default mail client just arrived and you’re about to compose a message to some recipients under the email alias [email protected].

These links are called mailto: hyperlinks and automatically open the default mail client’s compose window for you. If you want to change the default client for Firefox or Internet Explorer, this article will show you how to do that. For Firefox users

Here’s how you can change the default email client in Firefox to Gmail or the email service of your choice.

Step 1: Click Options from the drop-down menu below the big orange Firefox button (this option is available in version 4 and up. In previous Firefox versions, this option was under Tools at the top).

Step 2: Navigate to the Applications tab and select your appropriate mail client for the mailto: content type. Gmail and Yahoo Mail are available in the list by default and will open compose windows for the signed in client.
