How to Block or Allow a Program in Windows 7 Firewall

Windows Firewall

We talked about a lot

Windows applications require network access to work properly

. Whenever we talked about them, we mentioned a note that you must allow the program to go through the Firewall if you have one installed on your system.

Personally, I feel that the inbuilt Windows firewall provides enough security for the average home user and is extremely easy to use. If you are one of such users, today we will see how you can block and allow individual programs through the Windows Firewall.

Sometimes, by accident or by some other factor, a program may be blocked or allowed by an inbuilt firewall. Therefore, one may need to change these settings manually at times. So let’s see how this stuff is done.

Change firewall program access permission

Step 1: Normally, to open Firewall settings in Windows 7, you need to open Control Panel from Start Menu, then under System and Security click on Windows Firewall.

However, why drag a horse to the pond when the pond can come to you! Just search for Firewall in the Start Menu and open Windows Firewall from the list of returned items.

Open Windows Firewall

Step 2: On the Windows Firewall window, click on the option Allow a program or feature through Windows Firewall to open the Allowed Programs window.

Allow or block the program

Step 3: Once done, on the Allowed Programs window you will see a list of all the applications installed on your computer that can communicate over your network and their current access status on the Home and Public network. The check mark indicates that the program can access the internet through the Windows Firewall.

Note: If you are unsure about a program, select it and click details button for a brief look at the program description.

Step 5: Once you are done changing program access in Firewall settings, click OK button to save the settings.

Conclusion

That’s it, every time you see an app giving an error like “Unable to communicate with network” even though you are connected to the internet, this is when you should start troubleshooting. Also, don’t forget to check out ProcNetMonitor, a great tool to easily monitor all the programs that are using your network connection at a given time.
