One of the best features that has been added to Windows 8.1 Mobile is the ability to back up the entire phone. That means the new backup feature not only allows you to back up data like contacts, messages, and apps, but also the settings and associated data of individual apps. In addition, you can also backup phone settings, Wi-Fi and Bluetooth information, home screen layout, etc.
That means when you flash your phone or upgrade to a new Windows Mobile device, you’ll have everything exactly the same. So let’s see how we can perform backups on Windows Mobile 8.1 devices and then see how to manage and restore them in the future.
Backup on Windows Mobile 8.1
For simplicity, Microsoft stores device backups on OneDrive. This makes it easy to restore data wherever you need it. Alternatively, these backups can be made on a cellular network, but connecting to a Wi-Fi network would be an ideal option.
On your Windows Mobile, open settings and navigate to Support select. You will see three different modules here, namely Apps+Settings, Text Messages and Photos+Video. By default, each of them will be turned off.

Finally, you have the option of backing up your photos and videos to the cloud, and that’s what will consume the most of your bandwidth. So if your phone has expandable storage where you store all your media or you regularly back up photos and videos to your PC, you can skip the backup step.
But if bandwidth is not an issue and you don’t clearly see your photos saved in the cloud, then go ahead.
Note: All media will be uploaded to your OneDrive storage, so make sure you have enough cloud storage.

Backup Management
All backups are stored on your OneDrive, but not exactly in a folder that you can access directly. To manage that, open and sign in to OneDrive and click Get more memory option at the bottom left of the page where you see all your files.
On the next page, click Device backup and you’ll be able to see all the backups you have for each device you’ve created on OneDrive. If you want to delete any old backup just hit the delete button.
Restore backups on Windows Mobile
The phone can only be restored when you set it up for the first time. So that means you’ll have to either format the phone completely or buy a new phone that runs on Windows Mobile to restore the backup.
When you sign in to your Microsoft account while setting up your phone, it automatically scans OneDrive and gives you a list of available backups that you can choose to restore. If you have multiple backups, the data they are generated from will help you select the form.
The phone will be restored before the setup is complete and you will get all your settings, messages, and photos exactly the same way you left them on your previous device. However, you may be asked to confirm some security codes during this process.
