How to Add Reactions to Videos on TikTok

You must be familiar with the popular reaction videos on YouTube. In those videos, people record themselves expressing their feelings and views about a YouTube video. Taking a cue from that, TikTok built a similar feature that allows anyone to create reaction videos easily without leaving the TikTok app.

This feature was introduced in September 2018 when Musical.ly merged with TikTok. So how does one use the react feature on TikTok? Read on for all the details.

What is a reaction video?

Did you watch a funny video on TikTok? You can record your reaction and add narration using the react feature.

Reaction videos carry an original video that’s been combined with your or anyone’s reactions. So two video clips are merged into one play at the same time.

How to make a reaction video

Navigate to the TikTok video to which you want to add your reaction. Then tap the Share icon to open the Share menu. Tap the React option.

TikTok will present you with a video creation screen. You’ll find the original video and a small floating window above it showing a preview of your camera. Hold the Video button at the bottom to start recording a video. You can lift a finger off the video button to pause recording and resume it by pressing it again.

Audio plays an important role in reaction videos. Sure, you can only react with facial expressions, but the audio and dialogue will make the video more interesting. By default, TikTok turns on the microphone on your phone and will record any background noise along with your reaction. However, if you want to disable the audio input, tap the Mic icon on the react screen to disable the microphone.

Audio Editing

A typical reaction video brings the audio from the original video and the audio/voice you recorded. By default, TikTok balances them in such a way that you can hear them together. However, if you want to change the sound, such as turning off the soundtrack, lowering the volume of the soundtrack, or increasing the volume level of the audio — you can do that using the audio mixer feature.

Here’s how to use it. After you record the reaction video, the app will take you to the editing screen. Here, tap the Mixer icon at the top. Then adjust the volume of My Voice and Soundtrack using the respective sliders. Dragging them to the right will increase and dragging to the left will decrease their sound level. Finally, click on the checkmark icon to apply the changes.

Change the position of the response box

Usually, the reaction box appears in the top left corner of the video. But you can change its position by dragging it around. You need to do that before you start recording the video. However, you can pause your reaction video recording and move the reaction box around.

Change the size of the react box

Likewise, you don’t need to use the default size of reactbox. To change the size of the box, use two fingers to pinch in or out.

Change the shape of the reaction box

TikTok offers two shapes for your reaction videos — a circle and a rectangle. To switch between them, tap the reaction box before you start the video. You can change the shape multiple times by pausing the reaction video.

You can record a reaction video using the front and rear cameras. To switch cameras, tap the Camera switch icon at the top of the recording screen. Alternatively, double tap the reaction window to switch cameras instantly.

Rotate the reaction box

The interesting thing is that when you rotate the react box, the view angle also rotates. You can use that trick to create some unique and sophisticated videos. To rotate the reaction box, hold it with one finger and use your second finger to rotate it. Again, you need to do that before hitting the record button.

Zoom video

If you are a regular TikTok or Instagram story user, you know how to zoom in on a video. The same gesture also applies to reaction videos. When you hold the record button while recording, drag your finger up to zoom and slide down to zoom out.

Difference between Duet and React

TikTok offers a feature called Duet that allows you to share your screen with others or with yourself. In a duet, the second video plays to the left of the main video and does not overlap the original video. You cannot change its position, shape, or size. People used it to record reactions before developers added React functionality.

Reaction videos are the future
