His father, Deepak Gambhir manages a textiles business while his mother is a housewife. Just eighteen days after his birth, Gautam’s maternal grandparents adopted him. He lived with them and they were responsible for raising him.

The Delhi Daredevils wrapped up the acquisition of Gautam in the 2008 Indian Premier League (IPL) auction for US$725,000 a year deal. In his debut season, he finished as the second highest run-scorer with 534 runs from 14 matches.

In his two seasons career with the Delhi Daredevils, he put in some very impressive performances. Before his services were acquired by the Kolkata Knight Riders, he was named in the 2008 ESPNcricinfo IPL XI.

From 2011 to 2017, Gautam played for his new employers the Kolkata Knight Riders in the IPL. who purchased him for US$2.4 million in the 2011 IPL player auction. He became the highest paid cricket in IPL history.
