Who is Michael Phelps?
Michael Fred Phelps was born June 30, 1985 to Deborah Sue Phelps and Michael Fred Phelps. His father is a retired Maryland State Trooper while his mother was a middle school principal.
Although he was born in Baltimore, Maryland, he was raised Rodgers Forge neighborhood of a nearby Towson. He schooled at Rodgers Forge Elementary, Dumbarton Middle School and then Towson High School.
Michael is an American with English, German, Irish, Scottish and Welsh descent. In 1994, his parents divorced when he was just nine years. The divorce took a toll on Phelps and his siblings as his father was away for a few years. He later graduated from Towson High School in 2003.
Phelps’ career in swimming dates back to when he was barely seven. He took on swimming partly because of the influence from his sisters and also as a means to help increase his energy. “The only reason I ever got in the water was my mom wanted me to just learn how to swim. My sisters and myself fell in love with the sport, and we decided to swim” Phelps said after his retirement in 2016.
When Phelps was in the sixth grade, he was diagnosed with attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD). By the age of 10, he held a national record for his age group (in the 100-meter butterfly) and began to train at the North Baltimore Aquatic Club under coach Bob Bowman.
