The extraordinary life of Sister Wilhelmina Lancaster is in the public eye after the remains of the Catholic nun were excavated in what some believers claim was a miraculous act of holiness because there were few signs of deterioration after her death in 2019.
Because Lancaster was buried in a plain wooden coffin without any embalming, the nuns of the order claim that her body was being reinterred to make room for a building project and that they had only anticipated to find bones. Instead, they discovered an intact body and ‘a perfectly preserved religious habit,’ the statement said. The nuns hadn’t meant to publicize the discovery, but someone shared a private email publicly and ‘the news began to spread like wildfire.’

Sister Wilhelmina had First Communion in 1934 when she was nine years old, and later claimed in an autobiography that she had a vision in which “Our Lord asked me if I would be His.” She later created the religious order that she wrote about in the autobiography. When her priest inquired about her thoughts on becoming a nun following this encounter, she immediately jumped at the chance and, at the age of 13, wrote a letter of application to the Baltimore-based Oblate Sisters of Providence asking to join. She went back to her studies at school after realising that she would have to wait until she graduated from high school to start the process of becoming a nun.
Lancaster’s parents, who did not want her to attend public school, started St. Joseph’s Catholic High School for Negroes when the neighbourhood Catholic high school started to be segregated.She commenced training with the Oblate Sisters of Providence in 1941 after graduating with honours from the institution her parents had helped create.
According to the Catholic Key, she chose the new name “Wilhelmina” in honour of her pastor, Fr. William Markoe, who encouraged her to pursue her vocation. She made her vows of poverty, chastity, and obedience with the order on March 9th, 1944.
Lancaster served as a teacher, archivist, and assistant at the Mount Providence Centre of Music and General Culture during her 50 years with the Oblate Sisters of Providence. She battled valiantly to keep the customs of the order alive, especially the wearing of the complete habit, even making one for herself after the sisters stopped making them. She manufactured pieces of her own habit out of a bleach bottle made of plastic. When a troubled student hurled a knife at her, it was deflected by the stiff, high-necked collar of the outfit, possibly saving her life. Sister Wilhelmina founded the Benedictines of Mary, Queen of Apostles in 1995. This is a stringent contemplative order that adheres to the Rule of St. Benedict.
The novices in Lancaster’s order cared for her at her bedside as her health deteriorated in 2019, and one of them prayed in particular to “witness a preparatory grace” before her death.
Lancaster was heard to exclaim: ‘Jesus, Jesus! He is the Good Shepherd. He wants everyone to go to heaven! He says everyone is supposed to go to heaven!’
On the grounds of the monastery, Lancaster was personally buried after passing away on May 29, 2019. In April, her body was unearthed to make room for the addition of a St. Joseph shrine, the religious order said in a statement.
