Tan Cheong Min’s Biography
Tan Cheong Min born on August 20, 1998, is a 25 year-old Malaysian wushu athlete who won a gold medal in the Nandao event and a silver medal in the Nanquan event as well as the tandem event at the 2019 World Wushu Championships held in Shanghai, China.
Tan Cheong Min was named National Sportswoman at the 2019/2020 National Sports Awards and is the first wushu athlete to receive this award. Tan Cheong Min, who was previously in a class of her own after winning two gold medals in Taolu (Nandao + Nangun) and Nanquan at the 2023 SEA Games in Cambodia, will use this victory as motivation to proudly stand on top.
Tan Cheong Min was born in Cheng, Melaka. Her younger brother, Tan Cheong Wan, is also a wushu athlete. She attended primary school at SJK (C) Cheng, and later became interested in wushu when she saw the Malacca State Wushu team perform at her school and was fascinated by their acrobatic moves. She started taking wushu classes at the age of 9 as an extracurricular activity. She initially participated in the Changquan, Daoshu and Gunshu events.
She participated in her first youth championship in 2010, when she was 12 years old. Her talent was discovered by the national team coach when she won a bronze medal at SUKMA in 2012. She then joined Bukit Jalil Sports School in 2013 and became a reserve athlete of the ‘Team Nation’. During this period, she began participating in Nanquan events on the advice of her coach. She received a bachelor’s degree in information technology from Asia Pacific University.
Tan Cheong Min bagged Malaysia’s first silver medal in Hangzhou after completing her women’s nanquan and nandao all-around events on Tuesday and emerged as the first Malaysian to win double gold medals at the 2023 Southeast Asian (SEA) games.

She started working in the kitchen at the age of 10 and helped her mother, Goh Swee Lian prepare various dishes for the family.
She also inherited talent from her father, Tan Poh Chuan who is also a chef and opened a family cafe in Melaka. With her skills, Tan Cheong Min continues her family’s legacy as she can now prepare many different types of dishes, but her favorite dish is steamed food every time she is in the kitchen.
