Avatar: Frontiers of Pandora is nearly here, and this is the first time we’ve had a game set in this world since the 2009 movie tie-in game. From our preview, we got a taste of what we can expect when the game fully releases and although we don’t know everything about the latest game from Ubisoft, we are pretty sure these below will scratch a similar itch while you wait.
Few games will be able to capture the excitement and freedom of being a big blue alien with a ponytail jumping through the trees. Instead of focusing on ponytails though, the games below all feature beautiful open worlds, a sense of discovery and rich environments to explore, hopefully capturing the essence of the latest game from Ubisoft.

If you just want to enter the world of Pandora and have a little explore, your best option is going to be the film tie-in from 2009. The game follows two different storylines: one that follows the Na’vi with a focus on melee combat, while the human storyline is all about shooting.
Sadly, this game was not a critical success – but it is the only game set in this world so far. The game isn’t available digitally anymore either, so if you do want to play it you will have to find a physical copy secondhand.

Assassin’s Creed Odyssey sees the popular world of Assassins and mystical weapons visit the lands of Ancient Greece. Regardless of which protagonist you choose, you will get to explore the beaches and islands of Greece on your ship. visiting whatever catches your eye in the distance.
This is one of the more RPG-heavy Assassin’s Creed games, and the open world is truly huge, with plenty to discover and explore. You will also be able to use a bow and arrow during your playthrough, which is a bit like the Na’vi.
Star Wars Jedi: Survivor

The Avatar games are all set on a faraway planet that is rich with resources and occupied by strange, bizarre fauna. If this is what you want, then Star Wars Jedi: Survivor will be the exact experience you’re looking for.
You will meet plenty of different aliens, ride mounts to explore the world and once again, rely on exploration to push you through the journey. It’s not necessarily relevant to Avatar, but the lightsaber fun is a lot of fun too.
Far Cry 6

You could have any Far Cry on this list really, because this is the series the gameplay in Avatar: Frontiers of Pandora looks to take the most inspiration from. From what we have seen and played, it shares the same first-person style of gameplay, using animals as your allies to help you manoeuvre your way through the world and combat the many foes.
Far Cry 6 may not carry the same level of mystique as what we would expect from a game set in Pandora, but if you want to know how the game will feel this is a good place to start.

If you want to wield a bow against giant mechanical enemies while exploring vast unknown lands featuring beautiful biomes all whilst sporting a ponytail, the Horizon series is exactly what you’re searching for. Unfortunately, the games are PlayStation exclusive (excluding Horizon Zero Dawn which is on PC), so if you’re on a different platform you may have to refer to a different game on the list. The Horizon games are the closest you can get to an Avatar experience without painting yourself blue and going into the jungle.
