Sometimes, developers do silly things that upset users, and iOS system updates are a perfect example of this.
Have you tried updating your iPhone or iPad to the latest iOS 11 version? You tap on the Download and Install option and nothing happens. You look closer only to see it turn gray. And, it stays the same no matter how much you tap on it.
What is really happening?
Mainly due to stupid and outdated limitations regarding mobile data. However, there is also another reason that can cause this problem.
So let’s see what you can do to get the Download and Install option working again. Also, let’s look at a few workarounds to get around said limitation.

iOS hates mobile updates
Apple clearly thinks that people are stupid enough to manage their monthly mobile data quota. Even if you have tens of gigabytes available to use on your cellular connection, there is practically no way to use that space for system updates.
Sadly, that means you have to switch to a Wi-Fi connection. You’ll also see a message — in a much smaller font — prompting you to connect to Wi-Fi listed directly below the grayed out Download and Install option.
To switch to Wi-Fi, just tap Wi-Fi via the Settings screen and tap the toggle next to Wi-Fi.
Once you’re connected, just go to the Software Update screen. The Download and Install option should work properly now.
This is the problem
You’re connected to Wi-Fi and you still see Downloads and Settings grayed out. Oh!
Before you start tearing your hair out, calm down!
iOS 11 has a feature enabled by default called Wi-Fi Assist. This causes your device to automatically switch to mobile data in the event of a poor Wi-Fi connection. Unfortunately, it can still appear as if you’re using Wi-Fi when it’s not.
To work around this, move closer to the Wi-Fi source to establish a good connection, or turn off Wi-Fi Assist completely.
To do that, go to Cellular Data, scroll all the way down to the list of apps, and turn off Wi-Fi Assist.
That’s it! That will do the trick.
Note:
Mobile data alternative
If you prefer using mobile data over Wi-Fi to update your system, you can still use some alternatives to get the job done.
Obviously, transferring your SIM to another device and connecting your iPhone or iPad to a hotspot created on that device should work. However, the following alternatives do not require removing your SIM card at all.
Turn off Wi-Fi while downloading
It’s very simple to do but still requires a Wi-Fi connection to start the download.
Step 1: Once you have switched to Wi-Fi or turned off Wi-Fi Assist, tap on the Download and Install option.
Step 2: You’ll get a pop-up asking to confirm the download over Wi-Fi, with a brief statement that leaving the Wi-Fi network will incur additional usage charges. Click Continue to continue.
Step 3: Now, swipe up from the bottom of the screen to bring up the Control Center, then tap the Wi-Fi icon to turn off Wi-Fi.
The download will happen using mobile data now.
Note:
Cellular data channel via iTunes
This workaround requires a PC or Mac with iTunes installed. Before you begin, disconnect your desktop or laptop from any Wi-Fi hotspot it’s connected to, then connect your iPad or iPhone via USB.
Step 1: Go to the Settings screen on your iOS device and tap on Personal Hotspot. Next, tap the switch next to Personal Hotspot to turn it on.
Step 2: On the pop-up box, select Bluetooth and USB only.
Step 3: Your PC or Mac should now have a supported Internet connection via cellular data or your iPhone or iPad.
Step 4: Launch iTunes, select your iOS device, then click Summary.
Step 5: Click Update to start updating your device. iTunes will inadvertently use cellular data to download updates.
Congratulations! You’ve successfully fooled iOS 11. After downloading the update, follow all the onscreen prompts to install the update.

A small obstacle
If your device has less than 50% battery left, iOS 11 will prevent you from installing the update. You get the Install Now option grayed out.
Luckily, you don’t have to wait for the percentage counter to hit 50% while charging. Just connecting it to a charging station is enough. You also shouldn’t have this problem when using the iTunes alternative as the USB connection will automatically charge your device.

That should have fixed it
Hopefully the Download and Install option worked and you now have the shiny new iOS update installed. Usually, it’s because Wi-Fi isn’t turned on, or rarely, Wi-Fi Assist works automatically without your knowledge.
At the end of the day, Apple really needs to give users the option to update their devices over cellular data without having to resort to Wi-Fi or other alternatives.
While this limit is understandable given the high price of mobile data, they should at least let the user decide. Come on, this is not 2007 to cry out loud!
