Disable 3-dot Menu On HTC One X & Map Menu to Task Switcher Button

When I was using the Samsung Galaxy S smartphone, I became familiar with the operation of the three soft buttons – back, home and menu buttons. After I bought the HTC One X the other day, it also came with three soft keys, but to my surprise the third button didn’t serve to call up the menu. Instead, it is for switching between recent apps.

With long use, I realized that most of the new apps these days following the ICS trend have a three dot menu button somewhere on the apps screen but those that haven’t been updated the phone introduces a strip of three buttons at the bottom of the screen to open the menu.

The first screenshot above is of an ICS-optimized app with a built-in three-dot menu button. The second screenshot, on the other hand, is of an app that isn’t optimized for ICS with a three-button system menu at the bottom. The system-generated three-dot button takes up 1/10 of your display, and it can be very annoying at times.

Quick Tip: If you’re curious about what’s new in Android ICS, this Android developer page provides some insight into the stuff of this new operating system.

While the inclusion of the three-dot button isn’t annoying at first, when you’re playing games in full screen, the button can really get on your nerves. So today I will tell you how you can fix this. What we’re going to do is we’ll map the recent apps key as the menu button and use the long press home key to launch Recent Apps, just like in previous Android versions.

You can also change the action of pressing and holding the home button to start the menu and not touching the recent apps button but I prefer the first approach.

This process involves rooting the phone so be warned!

Edit 3-dot menu

Step 1: Unlock your HTC One X bootloader and install ClockworkMod Recovery and root it. Click the link to view our guide.

Step 2: Once you have completed both tasks, download the zip files to flash. For those who want to map the menu button to the recent apps function key, download this file (MD5# 9D0655EFB315C206873C481805F5E3C7) and those who want to use the long press home button to invoke the menu should download this file instead (MD5# B7D4C9F20F326A96B9E589C329207D8).

Update: For users on 1.26/1.28 and stock firmware, download the Aroma installer fix. Please ignore the download links above and use this file instead.

Once you’ve downloaded the files, connect your HTC One X to your computer, mount the storage, and move the files to the root of your SD card.

Note: Do not open or modify the zip file.

Step 3: Turn off your mobile and reboot during recovery using Volume Down + Power button and start ClockworkMod Recovery (You will only see this option once CWM has been installed using Part 2 of our rooting guide).

Step 4: On ClockworkMod Recovery, navigate to Install zip from SD card (second option on home screen)—>Select zip from SD card (first option on following screen). Now select the zip file you copied to the SD card in step 2 and flash it.

That’s all, now reboot your system and use your phone screen as it is meant to be. Don’t forget to share with us how you feel while playing games and browsing through apps after fixing the new menu button on your HTC One X.
