Difference Between LED, LCD, Plasma TVs and Which One to Buy

There was a time when buying a TV was easy. Your favorite brand just sold a TV and all you have to do is walk into a store and drop your bags. Those times make only good anecdotes now. Today, buying a TV means choosing between countless brands and more importantly choosing the type of screen – LED, LCD or Plasma.

When viewed from a distance, LED, LCD and Plasma, all look the same. They are flat, thin, and come in a variety of sizes. But don’t be fooled by the looks and choose on its basis. They all have some advantages and disadvantages that you should know before you buy.

So today, we will first understand some basics of LCD, LED and Plasma TVs in plain English, followed by a quick scoreboard and checklist. Finally, we will try to answer the most important question: Which of them should you buy?

Hot Tip: Don’t forget to read our specific guide on how to connect your computer to your TV.

LCD TV

LCD TV

LCD (Liquid Crystal Display) is the most common type of display today when it comes to televisions. In LCD TVs, the LCD screen is in front of the fluorescent backlight display. The TV displays an image when light from the back of the screen hits the LCD screen, and the picture is produced with a combination of colors.

Favorable

  • LCD TVs are relatively inexpensive and are the best option for anyone looking for a flat screen TV.

Defect

  • One of the biggest downsides of an LCD monitor is that it can’t deliver a true black experience.
  • Not suitable for high frame rate gaming due to higher latency and motion lag.

Confusing jargon: In this article, we have used one term over and over when comparing TV quality and that is real black. True Black is the TV’s ability to produce a completely black background, so that blacks (such as a dark room) will look completely black. However, because the TV works on the principle that the backlight shines on the screen, it is difficult to create a true black effect. The front screen must turn completely black or the backlight that hits the screen must be turned off for a specific area to produce true black.

LED TV

LED TVs (Light Emitting Diodes) are basically just LCD screens. The difference is that the light behind the display used to illuminate the fluorescent display in the LCD is replaced by a small LED. The operation of the TV remains the same, but due to the use of LEDs, the screen is much thinner in size, saves power, and can deliver true blacks to a much greater extent.

How do LED TVs work?

So let’s take a look at some of its advantages and disadvantages.

Favorable

  • LED TVs are extremely thin when compared to others and come in a variety of sizes.
  • Because smaller LEDs are used to illuminate the screen, they consume less power.
  • They have a high response time and as a result, one can enjoy high frame console gameplay without any lag and motion lag.
  • Deliver a richer, truer black experience than LCD TVs.
  • LED TVs have a wider viewing angle of about 175 degrees, giving better picture quality even when you watch from angles.

Disadvantage

  • They are expensive when compared to LCD and Plasma TVs.

plasma television

A plasma TV is essentially an array of light-emitting gas cells sandwiched between two panes of glass. The fact that they don’t rely on an external light source to power the display, they can deliver a truly amazing black effect. However, a glass panel is required for plasma TVs and that is why they are quite bulky and give high glare when viewed in daylight.

plasma television

Each light-emitting cell acts as an individual fluorescent tube, making the TV more power-efficient, but the picture is sharper and more natural when compared to LCD TVs.

Advantage

  • Creates great natural blacks.
  • Excellent picture quality and screen refresh rate. Ideal for gaming.

Disadvantage

  • Bulky and less energy efficient.
  • The screen is glared when used during the day.

Which should you buy?

So now the real question is, should you choose one of the above. Ideally, if budget is not a criterion, an LED TV would be your best bet. They provide excellent picture quality even at wide viewing angles and are ideal for living rooms. You can also choose from different sizes.

If you have a limited budget then LCD or Plasma are the remaining options. For a standard well-lit living room, I would recommend an LCD TV. Plasma TVs have a glass finish and as a result they glaze over when used in bright light. If you are considering making a home theater where you can control the ambient light and make it dark, then you can go for a Plasma TV. The picture quality is amazing but you need to be aware that all of that comes at an extra cost in the form of energy consumption. If an LED TV consumes ‘x’ power units, ideally an LCD and Plasma TV of the same size will consume ‘2x’ and ‘3x’ power units respectively.

Hopefully now you have a better understanding of the differences and just need to focus on the brand. That’s what we’ll leave you with (check out places like Amazon reviews and other shopping sites). Tell us about your TV buying experience.
