Diablo 4 player count for October 2023 & is it a dead game?

Diablo 4 has been slated as a ‘dead game’ due to the heavily dwindling player count – but is the game truly dead, or does it just need a bit of a revival with some new content?

When we reviewed Diablo 4, we gave it a 4.5, and found that the game was very well-polished overall. However, Season 1 came along and it didn’t add as much content as players may have wanted, and was controversial in the fact that you have to create a new character to access its Seasonal content.

With Season 2 of Diablo 4 now on the horizon and set to bring a new Vampire companion alongside other quality-of-life improvements, let’s look at the current player count and whether it’s a ‘dying’ game in the run-up to its arrival.

What is the Diablo 4 player count ahead of Season 2?

Blizzard doesn’t release its player number figures directly, but according to Active Player, Diablo 4 currently has an active player count of 5.2 million users in the last 30 days.

Overall, this is a player count decrease by about 1.3 million. This is a pretty significant dip in the number of players who are currently playing the game and frequently logging in when compared to the month of September, which saw a large increase from the prior month.

In terms of daily figures, Diablo 4 currently sees an average of just over 264,000 players log in every day.

It’s worth noting that these figures take into account players on every platform, including PC, Xbox, and PlayStation. Diablo 4 player counts on individual platforms will be lower, although the game does support crossplay.

This increase in Diablo 4 players is likely due to the game receiving plenty of ongoing support from Blizzard. Not only has Season 1 introduced plenty of additional features and loot to find, but the game is constantly updated with hotfixes that bring welcome quality-of-life improvements.

In addition, with Season 2: Season of Blood on the horizon, it seems that many players are looking to level up their characters in advance for when new content drops later in October.

Based on the numbers, it would appear that we can’t call Diablo 4 a ‘dead game’ just yet. However, it is heading towards a pretty significant decline, and it could possibly become so if Season 2 doesn’t revive it.

Diablo 4 Season 2 is set to release on October 17, 2023, and will feature Gemma Chan playing the new Vampire companion, Erys. We don’t know just yet the extent of how large the Season 2 update will be, but we will update our guide once we learn more.
