Biography of Derrick Lewis

Lewis was the second oldest of seven children raised in New Orleans, Louisiana by a single mother. He struggled as a child and was frequently involved in street fighting.

In 1998, he and his family relocated to Houston, Texas, and this was where he began boxing training when he was 17 years old and was preparing for his first amateur match when the gym abruptly closed.

Lewis was placed on probation and charged with aggravated assault two weeks after graduating from high school.

Lewis violated his probation two years later, while attending Kilgore College on a full football scholarship, and was sentenced to five years in prison, but only served three and a half.

Lewis was introduced to mixed martial arts by a friend a week after his release and continued boxing under the tutelage of George Foreman while working as a tow-truck driver. Lewis decided to concentrate on mixed martial arts after dominating his first professional MMA fight.

Lewis competed against Guto Inocente at The Ultimate Fighter 19 Finale on July 6, 2014, in his second match for the promotion. In the first round, he obtained a KO victory.

On September 5, 2014, Lewis and Matt Mitrione squared off at UFC Fight Night 50. Lewis was quickly eliminated in the first round by Mitrione.

On July 30, 2022, Lewis and Sergei Pavlovich squared off at UFC 277.
