He joined Middlesex on July 7, 2006, and on July 8 at The Oval against Surrey in a Twenty20 Cup match, he made his first XI debut.

With 969 runs at an average of 51.00, Malan led the Second XI Championship in run scoring in 2007. In June 2008, he made his Middlesex first-class debut, scoring 132 not out.

In the Twenty20 Cup’s history, Malan scored the 24th century on July 8, 2008, scoring 103 off 54 balls against the Lancashire Lightning in the quarterfinal.

This made him the first player to record a century while batting at position six in a T20 game, and he kept the mark until July 2018.

From 2013 to 2015, Malan participated in two seasons of List-A domestic cricket with Prime Doleshwar Sporting Club in the Dhaka Premier League of Bangladesh, contributing both with his bat and his ball.

Before the 2018 season began, Malan was chosen as the team’s captain for all three forms. After quitting after the 2019 season, he signed a four-year deal to play for Yorkshire starting in the 2020 campaign in November of the same year.

Malan got his first double-century in first-class cricket with 219 runs in the third round of the 2020 Bob Willis Trophy matches in August of that year.

Malan participated for Peshawar Zalmi in the first Pakistan Super League (PSL) season and stayed with them the following year when they won the Lahore Final. He also participated in the fourth Bangladesh Premier League (BPL) season with Barisal Bulls.

Malan was selected for the Cape Town Blitz team to compete in the first Mzansi Super League T20 event in October 2018.

After the Bangladesh Premier League draft for the 2018–19 season, he was named to the Khulna Titans club later that month.

He was chosen in November 2019 to represent the Comilla Victorians in the Bangladesh Premier League for the 2019–20 season. He was chosen by the Jaffna Stallions in the first round of the Lanka Premier League in October 2020.

Malan joined the Hobart Hurricanes in December 2020 and made his Australian Big Bash League debut. Prior to the 2021 Indian Premier League, the Punjab Kings purchased Malan in the IPL auction in February 2021. He was only able to participate in one game throughout the season, though.

Trent Rockets selected Malan in the first round of The Hundred. He was acquired by the Trent Rockets in April 2022 in preparation for The Hundred’s 2022 season.
