From 1987 to 1989, Ashworth attended the College of West Anglia. Following his stint at Norwich City’s academy, Ashworth signed with non-league Eastbourne Town, where he played 21 games and scored four goals before transferring to St. Leonards.

After coaching West Florida Fury for a while, Ashworth later traveled to the United States and then returned to England to play for Wisbech Town. In the fall of 2000, Ashworth departed Wisbech due to financial issues that the club was experiencing.
