Cornel West Wife: Meet Annahita Mahdiva

Cornel West wife-American philosopher and political activist, Cornel Ronald West was born on June 2, 1953 in Tulsa, Oklahoma.

When he was a young man, West participated in civil rights marches and led protests calling for black studies classes at his high school, where he served as president of the student body.

In a subsequent essay, he claimed that as a young man, he had been inspired by “the sincere black militancy of Malcolm X, the defiant rage of the Black Panther Party, and the livid black theology of James Cone.”

Following his high school graduation in 1970, he enrolled at Harvard College where he studied philosophy under the tutelage of Stanley Cavell and Robert Nozick.

West earned a magna cum laude degree in Near Eastern languages and civilization from Harvard in 1973. He attributes his exposure to a wider spectrum of views at Harvard, impacted by both his academics and the Black Panther Party.

West claims that because of his Christianity, he was unable to join the BPP and instead opted to work in neighborhood breakfast, prison, and church programs.

Following the completion of his undergraduate studies at Harvard, West enrolled at Princeton University, where he earned a doctorate in philosophy (Ph.D.) in 1980.

He completed his dissertation under the guidance of Raymond Geuss and Sheldon Wolin, making history by becoming the first African American to receive this degree from Princeton.
