Who is Sakshi Malik?
Sakshi Malik is an Indian freestyle wrestler who was born on September 3, 1992. She became the first Indian female wrestler to win a medal in the Olympics when she earned the bronze medal in the 58 kg division at the 2016 Summer Olympics. She, along with fellow female wrestlers Vinesh Phogat, Babita Kumari, and Geeta Phogat, are all a part of the JSW Sports Excellence Programme.
Malik had earlier won the bronze medal at the 2015 Asian Wrestling Championships in Doha and the silver medal at the 2014 Commonwealth Games in Glasgow.

Sakshi Malik Educational Career
Professional Career:
In 2010 at the Junior World Championships, Malik achieved her first professional victory in the international ring when she earned the bronze medal in the 58 kg freestyle competition. She won the 60 kg division of the 2014 Dave Schultz International Tournament with a gold medal. She continued to play the game with the same fervour and determination after that and never stopped.
At the 2014 Glasgow Commonwealth Games, Malik won her opening match against Cameroonian Edwige Ngono Eyia by a score of 4-0. She faced Canadian Braxton Stone in the semifinal, which she won 3-1 to guarantee herself a medal. Aminat Adeniyi of Nigeria, her last opponent, outlasted her 4-0 in a fiercely contested match. She defeated Senegalese Anta Sambou 4-1 in the Round of 16 in the 2014 World Championships in Tashkent. She was eliminated from the competition after losing to Finnish player Petra Olli 1-3.
Malik competed in the 60 kg division over the course of five rounds at the 2015 Asian Championships in Doha, Qatar, and persevered through two of them to place third and win the bronze medal. At the Olympic World Qualifying Tournament in May 2016, Malik defeated China’s Zhang Lan in the semifinal of the 58 kg division to earn a spot in the 2016 Summer Olympics in Rio de Janeiro. She defeated Mariana Cherdivara of Moldova in the Round of 16 and Johanna Mattsson of Sweden in the Round of 32 in the Olympics. She defeated Kyrgyzstan’s Aisuluu Tynybekova, the current Asian champion, 8-5 in the repechage medal playoff after trailing 0-5 at one point, becoming India’s first female wrestler to win an Olympic medal.
Sakshi Malik competed for the “Colours Delhi Sultans” in the second Pro Wrestling League tournament, which took place in January 2017. She has also been highlighted in the JSW Group’s #EveryWomanStrong women’s day campaign. She participated in the Istanbul, Turkey, edition of the Yasar Dogu Tournament in 2022. At the Tunis Ranking Series competition in 2022, she took home the bronze medal in her category. She later went on to win the gold medal at the Commonwealth Games in Birmingham in 2022.
