Christopher Nolan biography

Nolan was born on July 30th, 1970 in Westminster, London in the United Kingdom. He was born to Brendan James Nolan and Christina Nolan who raised him in Highgate.

He shares the same parents with his elder brother, Matthew Nolan and his younger brother, Jonathan Nolan who also happens to be a filmmaker.

Nolan has both British and American citizenship and his childhood was split between London and Evanston, Illinois.

Growing up, Ridley Scott’s work, as well as the science fiction movies Star Wars (1977) and 2001: A Space Odyssey (1968), had a significant influence on Nolan. He would regularly view the latter movie and conduct an in-depth investigation into its production.

When Nolan was seven years old, he borrowed his father’s Super 8 camera and started making short movies with his action figures. These movies included the stop-motion animated Star Wars parody Space Wars.

He created sets out of “clay, flour, egg boxes, and toilet rolls” and starred his brother Jonathan in them. He received some launch films from his uncle, who built guidance systems for the Apollo rockets while working at NASA.

He had dreams of becoming a professional filmmaker since he was 11 years old. Between 1981 to 1983, Nolan attended Barrow Hills, a Catholic prep school sponsored by Josephite priests in Weybridge, Surrey.

Nolan began producing movies with Adrien and Roko Belic when he was a teenager. The bizarre 8 mm Tarantella (1989), co-directed by Nolan and Roko, was broadcast on Image Union, a showcase for indie movies and videos on the Public Broadcasting Service.

Nolan received his education at the independent Haileybury and Imperial Service College in Hertford Heath, Hertfordshire, and then went on to study English literature at University College London (UCL).

He chose to forego a traditional film education in favor of pursuing a degree in a field unrelated to film, as suggested by his father as offering a fresh perspective.

He deliberately chose UCL because it offers access to filmmaking resources like a Steenbeck editing suite and 16 mm film cameras.

While serving as the Union’s Film Society’s president, Nolan exhibited 35 mm feature films during the academic year with Emma Thomas, his then-girlfriend and future wife, and used the proceeds to make 16 mm films over the summers.

Christopher Nolan has two brother; Jonathan Nolan, Matthew Francis Nolan.
