Chita Rivera died on Tuesday, January 30, 2024, in New York after a brief illness, her daughter, Lisa Mordente said in a statement but did not give further details making it unknown the actual illness Chita Rivera died from.
She gained fame for originating lead roles in numerous Broadway musicals, including Anita in West Side Story, Velma Kelly in Chicago, and the title role in Kiss of the Spider Woman.
She has been nominated for ten Tony Awards and has won three, including one for Lifetime Achievement. She is the first Latina and Latino American to receive a Kennedy Center Honor and was awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom. In 2023, she published her memoir, Chita: A Memoir.
