She gained fame for originating lead roles in numerous Broadway musicals, including Anita in West Side Story, Velma Kelly in Chicago, and the title role in Kiss of the Spider Woman.

She has been nominated for ten Tony Awards and has won three, including one for Lifetime Achievement. She is the first Latina and Latino American to receive a Kennedy Center Honor and was awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom. In 2023, she published her memoir, Chita: A Memoir.

One of Rivera’s most significant accomplishments was her dual portrayal of Aurora and Spider-Woman in the musical Kiss of the Spider-Woman, for which she received Tony and Drama Desk awards for Best Leading Actress in a Musical in 1993.

Time Out New York named her one of the best Broadway divas of all time in 2019. Rivera has also been a regular guest narrator at Disney’s Candlelight Processional at Walt Disney World, most recently appearing in the 2021 and 2022 seasons.
