Born Joseph Fiddler in Detroit, Amp Fiddler played piano as a child and went on to study at Oakland and Wayne State Universities.
In the early 1980s, he sang with the vocal group Enchantment before replacing Bernie Worrell in Parliament-Funkadelic around 1984
Fiddler played the keyboard for George Clinton in Parliament-Funkadelic and worked with acts including Prince, Jamiroquai, and Maxwell.
Fiddler was also heralded for helping develop Detroit hip-hop and tutoring aspiring artists, partly through his informal production school, Camp Amp
He worked closely with top American record producer and drummer, J Dilla and is credited with introducing him (Dilla) to the Akai MPC, a sampling drum machine.
Even amid his long cancer fight, Fiddler continued to work, including studio projects during the past year with the Detroit trio Dames Brown.
