Check Out How The Nigerian Flag Looked Like Before Independence And Why It Was Changed

Just like any other country, Nigeria’s flag was changed after attaining independence.

The flag was neatly designed by Michael Taiwo Akinkunmi. The initial flag being used by Nigeria before independence the blue ensign of Britain, and the Star of David which is similar to that of the Southern Protectorate was adopted as the official flag of Nigeria.

The initial flag designed had the Star of David with the Crown of Solomon on the flag, however, this didn’t go down well with prominent Nigerians including music star, Fela Kuti. Due to the widespread displeasure of the flag, the government then thought it wise to change it to suit Nigerians.

A contest was held and Michael Taiwo Akinkunmi who was then a 23-year-old Nigerian student in London won the contest by designing a flag that was most appealing to the Judges.

His original design had a radiating sun badge in the central white vertical band with green vertical bands on each side. But, the judges upon receiving it took out the sun and since then it has been officially used by Nigerians to date.
