Check If You Are Getting Right Internet Speed with NetSpeedMonitor

I am sitting writing this at a coffee shop and working on a Wi-Fi connection. In my country (and I guess in a few others), Wi-Fi broadband is notorious for its fluctuating and slow speeds. As a full time web worker, I have to keep everything up to date and one of those things is steady internet speed.

NetSpeedMonitor is a lightweight network monitoring toolbar for your Windows Taskbar designed to be used on computers running Windows XP, Windows Server 2003, Windows Vista or Windows 7. One of the things I immediately liked about this traffic monitoring freeware is that it requires no additional drivers and works right after installation without any additional configuration.

NetSpeedMonitor works from the taskbar. You can view it by right-clicking on the taskbar and selecting the NetSpeedMonitor toolbar. Then you can proceed with its configuration options. The profile has several settings that allow you to choose which network interface you want to monitor – be it a fixed line internet connection or a data card. You can also configure these settings during the installation process.

A few other options set the layout of the pop-up bubble (tooltip) showing real-time monitoring data. For example, you can change the data display font; you can also set alternate names for download and upload.

The network speed (both upload and download) is displayed in the taskbar. If you hover over the location, a large tooltip will show the internet speed.

The tooltip also shows traffic statistics broken down by session, day, and month. You can stop monitoring by double clicking on the toolbar. You can go into the configuration settings and also choose the unit of measurement that the tool will use to gauge your network speed.

The data flow is written to a database file (this file is stored in the SQLite Database) and you can export it if you choose to use it as an analysis report.

Advanced users can click Connect on the quick access toolbar. A detailed list of all TCP and UDP endpoints is provided by the monitor. You can observe the local endpoints, the names of the remote servers, and the status of the TCP connections. You can inspect each process individually and choose to disable it with a right click.
