Former American football player, Charles Raymond White was born on January 22nd, 1958 in Los Angeles, California in the United States of America.

Charles White died on January 11th, 2023 in Newport Beach. He graduated from San Fernando High School in San Fernando, California, and while competing in track and field, he defeated future Olympic gold winner Andre Phillips to win the 330-yard low hurdles at the CIF California State Meet.

White played football for the USC Trojans while he was a student at the University of Southern California. The W.J. Voit Memorial Trophy was given to White in 1978 for being the best college football player on the Pacific Coast.

He won the Heisman Trophy, the Maxwell Award, the Walter Camp Award, and the UPI Player of the Year honors in 1979. He is the second Rose Bowl player (out of four overall) to get Player of the Game recognition twice (1979 and 1980).

The Cleveland Browns selected White with the 27th overall choice in the first round of the 1980 NFL Draft. White was released prior to the 1985 season after four underwhelming seasons in Cleveland, where he carried for a total of 942 yards and averaged 3.4 yards per carry. Later, White admitted that he battled a cocaine addiction during this time.

He reconnected with his college coach, John Robinson, who was then the Los Angeles Rams coach, after being released from the Browns in 1985. From 1985 to 1988, White would play with the Rams for four seasons. He ran for a league-high 1,387 yards and 11 touchdowns in 1987, which led to his nomination for the Pro Bowl and the NFL Comeback Player of the Year Award.

In addition to 114 receptions for 860 yards and one receiving touchdown, White concluded his NFL career with 3,075 running yards and 23 rushing touchdowns.

White began coaching running backs for USC in 1993; he then worked as a computer consultant. American Gladiators produced special “Pro Football Challenge of Champions” shows during its third and fourth seasons.

White took part in both and won them, coming from behind in the “Eliminator” each time due to mistakes made by his rivals. He also participated in the USC vs. Notre Dame alumni special from the sixth season, which he won and improved his record to 3-0.
