Bette Midler: Parents, Husband, Children, And All About Her

These include four Golden Globe Awards; three Grammy Awards; three Primetime Emmy Awards; two Tony Awards; and a Kennedy Center Honor, in addition to two Academy Award nominations and a British Academy Film Award.

In a neighborhood that was predominately Asian, her family was one of the few Jewish families. Her father, Fred Midler, worked as a painter at a Navy post in Hawaii and was also a house painter. Her mother, Ruth (née Schindel), was a seamstress and a stay-at-home mom.

Although Bette Midler pronounces her first name with one syllable rather than Davis’s two, she was given the name Bette Davis in honor of the actress. She was raised in Aiea and went to Honolulu’s Radford High School. Bette Midler attended the University of Hawaii at Manoa with a theater major but dropped out after three semesters.

Bette Midler first gained popularity in 1970 when she started singing at the Continental Baths (a nearby gay bathhouse), where she was able to develop a devoted fan base. Before appearing in Fiddler on the Roof and Salvation on Broadway in the late 1960s, Bette Midler had begun her professional career in a number of off-off-Broadway productions.

Bette Midler made her feature film debut as the lead in The Rose (1979), which also earned her a nomination for the Academy Award for Best Actress and the Golden Globe Award for Best Actress-Motion Picture Comedy or Musical. She continued to act in movies like Beaches (1988), Hocus Pocus (1993), The First Wives Club (1996), The Stepford Wives (2004), Parental Guidance (2012), and The Addams Family. She also appeared in movies like Down and Out in Beverly Hills (1986), Ruthless People (1986), Outrageous Fortune (1987), Big Business (1988), and Outrageous Fortune (2019). In addition, Bette Midler starred in the 1991 film “For the Boys” and the 1993 picture “Gypsy.” For the latter, she was nominated for a second Academy Award and won two more Golden Globe Awards.
