Best Water-type attackers in Pokemon GO for Raid Battles

Water-type Pokemon are some of the most popular creatures in the franchise, but only the best of the best will help you wash away the competition in Pokemon GO.

If you’re squaring off against a Fire, Rock, or Ground-type Raid Boss, you’re probably going to want some strong Water-type attackers on your team to take advantage of their weaknesses. Here are some of my top recommendations based on stats and my experience using them in the game.

What is the best Water-type Pokemon?

The best Water-type attacker in Pokemon GO is without a doubt Kyogre. This powerful Hoenn-region Legendary made waves when it debuted in the mobile game in 2018, and it continues to top the charts with the excellent combination of Waterfall and Origin Pulse.

Things only got better when Primal Kyogre made its long-awaited arrival in 2023, serving the same purpose as a Mega-Evolution by giving it a massive boost in power. If you have access to this Primal form, definitely use it, although regular Kyogre is still a top-tier choice.

The top Water-types in Pokemon GO listed

Here are the best Water-type attackers you can use in Pokemon GO as well as their recommended movesets:

I haven’t included Mega Evolutions in the table above to keep it accessible, but as a general rule of thumb, if you do have access to a Mega in the type you need, then you should always use it for high-level Raid Battles.

From that point of view, you’re going to want to look towards Mega Swampert, Mega Gyarados, and Mega Blastoise. Having one of these on your team will also boost the attack power of your other Water-types.

As with any Raid attacker in Pokemon GO, the higher the CP, the better, so I’d recommend choosing one Water-type Pokemon from the table above and focus on powering that one up with Candy and Stardust.

This can get costly, so treat it as a long-term goal rather than something you need to get done immediately.

Most of these Pokemon will also work well in battles against Team GO Rocket Grunts. For example, if you know a Grunt is going to use Fire-type Pokemon, you can use any of the Water-types above to counter them.

If you’re looking to take part in the GO Battle League instead of Raid Battles, it’s a little harder to recommend Pokemon of specific types. Instead, check out our Great League, Ultra League, and Master League best teams.
