Astro Bot release date, trailers, gameplay & platforms

The May 30 State of Play had some interesting surprises, but it was a shock for many that an Astro Bot game was the most exciting showing of the day.

Astro Bot has been a mascot of sorts for Sony this past decade, with titles like Astro’s Playroom and Astro Bot Rescue Mission. The latest game is set to release later this year and looks to be the character’s biggest showing yet.

Read on below to learn more about the upcoming game, such as its release date, gameplay, and release platforms.

What is the Astro Bot release date?

Astro Bot has a September 6 release date, with pre-orders opening up from June 7.

Astro Bot trailers

The only trailer so far is the announcement trailer from the May 30 State of Play. It ran for over three minutes, and featured tonnes of gameplay and cinematics, with flying, platforming, and boss fights just some of the highlights.

What do we know about Astro Bot gameplay?

From what we’ve seen so far, Astro Bot seems to be an action-adventure where Astro scours the galaxy in search of his missing crew.

According to the PlayStation blog that was released after the first trailer, the game is set to feature six galaxies to explore, with over 80 levels.

There seems to be a focus on a variety of mechanics, with the trailer showing off platforming sections, flying sections, boss fights, and much more. The blog also reveals that Astro can use 15 different abilities during his adventures, such as an air dash, a grapple swing, and a sponge to suck up water.

A surprising feature of the trailer was the robotic versions of various PlayStation characters, such as Kratos and Aloy. We don’t know exactly how they tie into the game, as they could be part of the crew you’re searching for or just one-off characters that appear in specific levels.

Astro Bot platforms

It’s confirmed to be a PlayStation 5 exclusive. However, as Sony has started to bring their titles to PC, we may see an Astro Bot port in a few years.

Interestingly, though, Sony hasn’t mentioned any VR specifics for Astro Bot, despite the fact it got its start on PSVR.
