Keatts started his coaching career as an assistant at Southwestern Michigan College during the 1996-97 season. After two seasons as an assistant coach at Hargrave Military Academy, he was named to head coach in 1999.
In 2001, Keatts joined Marshall as Greg White’s assistant coach. He returned to Hargrave in 2003 and remained the head coach until 2011.

In 2011, he graduated from Marshall University. Keatts then joined Rick Pitino’s staff at Louisville and was a member of the Cardinals’ 2013 NCAA Division I national championship team, which was eventually revoked by the NCAA due to recruiting violations committed from December 2010 to June 2014.
Pitino promoted Keatts to assistant head coach in January 2014 after seeing his coaching and recruiting abilities.

In his first season at UNCW, Keatts was voted CAA Conference Coach of the Year after leading the Seahawks to their first conference championship in nine years and their first winning season in seven.
In his second year, Keatts replicated his rookie-year feat by capturing the CAA regular-season championship and Conference Coach of the Year. When he won the 2016 conference-coach of the year award, he became the first coach in CAA history to do so twice.
On March 17, 2017, Keatts was named North Carolina State University’s 23rd head coach, succeeding Mark Gottfried.
Keatts is the first Wolfpack head coach to defeat Duke, North Carolina, and Wake Forest on his first try since Tal Stafford in 1918-1919.
After being anticipated to finish 12th in the ACC, Keatts guided the Mark Gottfried Wolfpack’s remaining recruits to a tie for third place in the conference and an at-large entry to the NCAA tournament.
