Tom Steyer is a $2.1 billion American hedge fund manager, environmentalist, philanthropist, and producer. Despite his success as the founder of a hedge fund in 1986, Tom Steyer later moved to politics and the environment.

He sold his Farallon Capital hedge fund shares in late 2012, and by February 2013, he had set aside $50 million to support select Democrats in that year’s elections. Tom contributed $11 million to Terry McAuliffe’s election as governor of Virginia in 2013.

Who is Tom Steyer?

Tom Steyer was born Thomas Fahr Steyer in Manhattan, New York on June 27, 1957. He is Marnie and Roy Steyer’s son, and he has two brothers, Jim and Hume. Roy was a lawyer at the law firm Sullivan & Cromwell, and Marnie taught remedial reading in a Brooklyn jail. Both of Steyer’s brothers are attorneys, and Jim is also an author and a Stanford University professor.

Tom grew up on Manhattan’s Upper East Side and attended Buckley School and Phillips Exeter Academy. He went on to receive degrees in political science and economics from Yale University, where he graduated with honors. He was a member of Phi Beta Kappa at Yale and served as captain of the soccer team.

Steyer was also a member of the Wolf’s Head organization, a senior organization. He eventually earned an MBA from Stanford Graduate School of Business, where he was an Arjay Miller Scholar. Tom served on Stanford’s board of trustees from 2007 to 2017.

Aside from politics, he is an active environmentalist, having participated in various environmental proposals on the California ballot. Steyer has been a vocal critic of the proposed Keystone XL oil project. In 2010, Tom and his wife, Kathryn Taylor, were among the first to join the Gates-Buffett Giving Pledge. Since then, the pair has given tens of millions of dollars to their alma maters, Stanford and Yale, for “advanced energy” research. They even established a foundation in 2004 to launch One Pacific Coast Bank, and have spent more than $50 million on it to date.

Following his departure from the corporation, Tom held the think tank “Big Think Climate Meeting.” In April 2020, California Governor Gavin Newsom appointed Steyer to co-chair a task team to “assist Californians in recovering as quickly as possible from the economic calamity caused by the coronavirus.”

Tom worked in Walter Mondale’s presidential campaign in 1984, and he was a delegate to the Democratic National Convention in 2004 and 2008. Steyer was considered for Treasury Secretary after Barack Obama was elected President in 2008.

Tom announced his candidacy for the Democratic presidential nomination in the 2020 election in July 2019. He participated in six televised debates, finishing sixth in the New Hampshire primary and seventh in the Iowa caucuses. He finished third in South Carolina, trailing Joe Biden and Bernie Sanders. Tom outspent every other Democratic candidate except Mike Bloomberg in campaign spending, spending more than $250 million.
