In 2010, he was hired as Syracuse’s quarterback and tight ends coach by head coach Doug Marrone. He liked working with Marrone and accompanied him to Buffalo when the Bills hired him as head coach in 2013. Hackett was hired as the team’s offensive coordinator. During this time, Hackett worked with players such as EJ Manuel, Thad Lewis, Jeff Tuel, and C.J. Spiller.

Following the 2014 season, head coach Marrone chose to opt out of his contract with the Bills and join the Jacksonville Jaguars as an offensive line and assistant head coach. He once again invited Hackett along. When Marrone was promoted to interim head coach in 2016, he named Hackett interim offensive coordinator. Hackett was formally hired for the post in January of 2017.

During the 2017 season, Hackett collaborated with quarterback Blake Bortles and running back Leonard Fournette to create the league’s greatest rushing attack. Jacksonville won the AFC South and competed in the AFC Championship Game. However, the next season, the club was unable to replicate its success, starting with a 3-8 record. Marrone dismissed Hackett in November 2018, following the Jaguars’ loss to the Buffalo Bills.

The action shocked Hackett, but he recovered fast. He was named as the Green Bay Packers’ offensive coordinator in January 2019 by head coach Matt LaFleur. Hackett worked closely with quarterback Aaron Rodgers to help the squad become the league’s top-scoring offense in 2020. Hackett continued with the Packers for the 2020 and 2021 seasons until being hired as the Denver Broncos head coach in January 2022.
