All You Need To Know About Craig Melvin’s Mother, Betty Melvin

American broadcast journalist and the news anchor for NBS News and MSNBC, Craig Delano Melvin was born on May 20th 1979 in Columbia, South Carolina. His parents were Lawrence and Betty Melvin. Craig Melvin has an older half brother named Rev. Lawrence Meadows who died of colon cancer in December 2020 and also had a younger brother named Ryan Melvin.

He was chosen to serve as Key Club International’s first African-American president in 1996. He graduated from Wofford College with a Bachelor of Arts in government in 2001. He was a senior counselor for South Carolina’s Palmetto Boys State program and a member of the Kappa Sigma fraternity.

Career and Career Timeline

As a high school student in Columbia, South Carolina, Melvin first began working for NBC affiliate WIS-TV as a “Our Generation Reporter” from 1995 to 1997. After graduating from college, he went back to work for WIS in July 2001 as a news photographer and producer before joining the morning news team as a reporter and creating his “Craig Cam” live segments. Before leading the weekday newscasts, he was then moved to a news anchor for the weekend morning and evening newscasts. Melvin also developed many shows for WIS-TV that, among other things, addressed problems with Columbia’s homeless population and schools. Melvin departed WIS-TV in July 2008 to work for NBC at its Washington, D.C., station, WRC-TV, where he anchored the weekend evening newscasts. Three years later, in July 2011, Melvin left WRC-TV to join MSNBC as a daytime anchor. He continued to work as a reporter for NBC News. In conjunction with NBC News, Melvin hosted TV One’s coverage of Election Night in 2012 as well as MSNBC’s coverage of the Republican and Democratic parties’ national conventions. In December 2012, he covered the Sandy Hook shootings as well.

2013 saw him cover the Moore tornado in May, the Asiana Airlines Flight 214 disaster, and the George Zimmerman trial. In 2014, Melvin covered Hannah Graham’s death in September and the shooting of Michael Brown in August. He covered Freddie Gray’s passing in June of that year as well as the Charleston church incident. In 2016, Melvin was one of the NBC correspondents covering both the Summer Olympics in Rio de Janeiro in August and the tragic shooting of Dallas police officers in July. He also took over for José Dáz-Balart as the anchor of MSNBC Live, which would later become MSNBC Reports, in the same year.

Melvin anchored Dateline: Secrets Uncovered, a true crime program, in 2017. On July 21, Oxygen broadcast its debut. Melvin covered the Winter Olympics for NBC in February of 2018 from Pyeongchang County. In September, he was elevated to the position of Today’s weekday news anchor, and in October, he joined the cast of hosts for Today’s Third Hour. Melvin co-hosted NBC’s annual presentation of the Rockefeller Center Christmas Tree lighting in December 2020. Melvin declared in March 2022 that he will stop hosting his hour of MSNBC Reports in order to concentrate on Today.

Personal Life & Children

Craig resided in Connecticut with his wife, Lindsay Czarniak, a former ESPN sports anchor and former WRC-TV sports reporter and they were blessed with two children, Delano, born in March 2014 and a daughter, Sybil, born in November 2016.

Awards

Craig Melvin received an Associated Press award and he was one of the youngest recipients of the award ever for his account of innovative teaching in 1996. With his contribution to the success of WIS-TV, Craig shared in the Emmy Awards won by the media establishment in 2003 and 2005. In 2006, Craig received his own Emmy Award as a news anchor. He was also named Best Anchor by the South Carolina Broadcasting Association in 2007.
