During his first year, he won the 165-pound national junior college wrestling championship and went 34-0. At Iowa Central, his roommate was Jon Jones, who also became a UFC champion. He faced Kamaru Usman for the Welterweight Championship in December 2019 and fractured his left mandible in the third round. Usman defeated Colby via a technical knockout.

In November 2021, the two faced off again, and Usman won by a unanimous decision. Colby parted ways with American Top Team in May 2020, telling “The Score,” “I am a member of Colby Covington Incorporated.” I am a member of Colby Covington’s business, team, and everything. “This is my team now.”
