He attended Thurston High School in Springfield, where he joined the wrestling team and won the 171-pound state championship in his senior year. Covington committed to Arizona State University, but his exam results were insufficient, so he attended Iowa Central Community College instead.

After graduating from college, Covington was recruited by the mixed martial arts team American Top Team, and by the time he signed with the UFC in 2014, he was 5-0.
