All About Transgender Swimmer Lia Thomas

Lia Catherine Thomas is a 23-year-old American swimmer who started attending the University of Pennsylvania in 2017, and she will graduate in May 2022. From 2017 to 2020, she competed for the university’s men’s swim team, and from 2021 to 2022, she represented the school’s women’s swim team.

Lia Thomas won the women’s 500-yard freestyle event in March 2022 to become the first openly transgender athlete to claim an NCAA Division I national title in any sport. She entered the public discussion concerning transgender women in athletics starting in 2021.

Lia Catherine Thomas started swimming at the age of five, and while representing Westlake High School, she finished sixth in the state high school swimming championships. She enrolled at the University of Pennsylvania in 2017. Lia Thomas intends to enroll in law school in order to pursue a career as a civil rights lawyer.

Nearing the end of high school, Lia Thomas started to have doubts about her gender identity. In the summer of 2018, after her first year of college, she came out to her family. On January 1st of 2020, she switched to her new name. She reportedly added in a Sports Illustrated interview, “In a way, it was similar to a rebirth since it was the first time in my life that I felt completely linked to my identity, who I am, and how I should live.”

Lia Thomas started transitioning on HRT in May 2019 and came out to her coaches, friends, and the University of Pennsylvania’s women’s and men’s swim teams during her junior year as a trans woman. She had to swim for the men’s team as a junior in the 2019–2020 academic year while receiving hormone therapy, and she had to swim for the women’s team the following year after taking a year off from school to maintain her eligibility to compete while the COVID–19 pandemic halted competitive swimming.
