Alistair Darling is survived by his two children; a son, Calum Darling (born in 1988), and a daughter, Anna Darling (born in 1990). The late British politician shares both children with his wife, Margaret Vaughan.
The former chancellor and Labour party veteran, Alistair Darling died from cancer at the age of 70 on Thursday, 30 November 2023, a spokesperson for his family has announced.
A statement issued on behalf of the family on Thursday afternoon said “The much-loved husband of Margaret and beloved father of Calum and Anna, died after a short spell in Western General Hospital under the wonderful care of the cancer team”.
Following his demise, tributes from all sides of the political divide have been paid to Darling.
The Labour leader, Keir Starmer said: “I am deeply saddened to learn of the passing of Alistair Darling. My heart goes out to his family, particularly Maggie, Calum, and Anna, whom he loved so dearly”

Rishi Sunak paid tribute to “a dedicated public servant who served this country through challenging times”, adding: “The role he played during the 2014 independence referendum was vital in keeping our union together”
Sir Tony Blair, Labour prime minister (1997 to 2007), said: “Alistair Darling was a rarity in politics. I never met anyone who didn’t like him. He was highly capable, though modest, understated but never to be underestimated, always kind and dignified even under the intense pressure politics can generate”
Gordon Brown, Labour prime minister during the financial crash, said: “I am deeply saddened by the death of Alistair Darling. I, like many, relied on his wisdom, calmness in a crisis, and his humor”
“Alistair will be remembered as a statesman of unimpeachable integrity whose life was defined by a strong sense of social justice and who gained a global reputation for the assured competence and the exercise of considered judgment he brought to the handling of economic affairs”
The foreign secretary, David Cameron, said: “Alistair was a thoroughly kind and decent man. Despite us representing opposing parties, I always valued his immense contribution and enjoyed working with him too”
Brian Wilson, a former Labour minister said: “He certainly wasn’t a prima donna, in any sense: he was just a calm, able guy, but always with a good moral and political compass. He was the right man at the right time”
Kezia Dugdale, former Labour leader in Scotland, said: “Compelling intellect, wicked sense of humor, phenomenal public servant and the most loving father and husband. Such a great, great loss”
Lord Stewart Wood, who was a Downing Street adviser under Brown, said Darling was a “wise, calm and clever politician, an extremely funny and generous man”
Darling was born in London in 1953 and attended Loretto School in Musselburgh, Scotland. He subsequently qualified as a lawyer and was a councilor in Lothian before being elected as an MP.
He held various senior positions in the Labour government, including transport secretary, Scotland secretary, and business secretary, before being promoted to chancellor in 2007.
He was best known as the steady pair of hands that oversaw Britain’s economy during the 2008 global financial crisis and executed the world’s biggest banking bailout at the time
Darling facilitated the bailout of the UK banking system following the sub-prime mortgage crash to the tune of £137bn; negotiated in a late-night meeting with bank bosses
In 2015, Darling joined the board of Morgan Stanley, the US investment bank, and took a seat in the House of Lords. He retired from the upper house in 2020.
