On Windows, GOM is the best alternative available for
VLC
. And in many ways it’s better. It has more features, good codec support, and it’s actually faster than VLC.
Learn more about why you should use it in our review here. In this article, we talk about how to make GOM better for you.
1. Assign handy keyboard and mouse shortcuts
Press F5 enter Interest, click overview options in the left sidebar and then select Mouse or keyboard from the menu bar.
Here you can assign specific keyboard shortcuts to any of the main playback operations. The default keyboard shortcuts from GOM are pretty minimal but you can tinker with all you want. For starters, you can assign different actions for Mouse Wheel Up/Down Scroll, Middle Button Click, Left Button Double Click, etc. There are many options available but if you are looking for a little touch inspiration, check out the image below.
You can also do the same for word shortcuts keyboard. GOM has a pretty large collection of those to start with. From here, you can change the default keyboard shortcut for any action or assign new ones.
2. Specify default subtitle behavior
If you are not satisfied with the default look of subtitles, I have good news. You can change every aspect of how subtitles are displayed on the screen by going to Interest -> subtitle. If you think the default white is too distracting, you can change it to a slightly cooler color, such as lime green.
You can also increase or decrease the font size. And when you’re done, just hit save and as long as you have Automatically change font size option is on, any new subtitles will work the same way. You can do that by right clicking anywhere in the playback window and selecting subtitle.
3. Using GOM Player for Couch Entertainment
If you enjoy watching movies from the couch, tapping your mouse to select another video can seem horrible. GOM has great playlist support. It identifies similar titles, such as upcoming episodes of the TV show you’re watching, and automatically adds them to the playlist.
It will even keep playing video after video until there’s nothing left. This makes GOM the perfect tool for avid followers.
Now let’s take care of getting up from the couch business.
Step 1: For this you will need to download the GOM Remote app for iOS or Android. It hasn’t been updated in a while so it still has the iOS 6 look to the iPhone but hey, it works.
Step 2: After downloading the mobile apps, simply download and install the GOM tray app for your Windows PC from here.
Step 3: With the GOM player and tray app running on your Windows machine, launch the mobile app and select New connection. Here you will see your PC listed. If not found, you can connect via your computer’s IP address or the 9-digit pairing key provided by the tray application.
That’s it. If your connection was successful, you now have a working remote for the GOM.
Unlike the remote for VLC, the GOM remote is just that, one remote control. The file selection and content selection interface will be displayed on the screen instead of your phone. You can use the navigation buttons to select options. And the remote app even lets you start GOM Player on your PC if it’s not running.
