It is January again, and the transfer window has opened again in the Premiership. The battle for top players — especially those that performed excellently in the recently concluded World Cup –is hitting up.

Romelu Lukaku’s return to Chelsea in 2021 appears to be a great deal after the Belgian helped Inter Milan stop Juventus’ dominance in the Italian league.
Romelu scored 47 goals and provided 11 in his two seasons at Inter after leaving Manchester United.
With Thomas Tuchel’s Chelsea in excellent form and Romelu Lukaku’s familiarity with the EPL football style, he is expected to continue his top-scoring form at the club.
However, Lukaku struggled in his second term at the West London club. He only netted eight times in his 26 appearances despite being the second most expensive player in EPL then.
The Belgian Striker eventually fell out of favour at Chelsea and was loaned back to Inter Milan in June 2021. He ended his second period at Chelsea, being one of the worst signings in the league.
Alvaro Morata – Real Madrid to Chelsea for £60m
Despite playing just 26 league games for Real Madrid in the 2016/17 campaign, Alvaro Morata was on fire with 15 goals and 4 assists.
This attracted many European clubs, including Arsenal, Chelsea and Manchester United. The blues, however, won the race for the Spaniard’s signature with a £60m fee.
Although his transfer fee broke Chelsea’s record then, the Spain striker had a poor outing with Chelsea in the following season.
His prowess in front of goal was below par as he only managed 15 league goals and 6 assists in 47 appearances in his two seasons at the club.
Alvaro Morata left Chelsea and joined Atletico Madrid on loan in the 2019 summer window before joining the La Liga club permanently the following season.
Tanguy Ndombele – Lyon to Tottenham for £53.8m
Tanguy Ndombele is another club record signing who didn’t perform up to expectations. Following an outstanding form with Lyon, the French Midfielder was compared to his fellow French Midfield Maestro, Paul Pogba.
Although the £53.8m signing was expected to add value to the previous year’s UEFA Champions League Finalists, his performance was disappointing in the 2019/20 season.
Spurs also struggled in the campaign, which led to the sack of Mauricio Pochettino from the club.
The French Midfielder’s lack of fitness saw him struggle under four managers in the EPL. Ndombele was loaned to Lyon in the 2022 summer transfer window, and he is currently on loan at Napoli.
Fernando Torres – Liverpool to Chelsea for £50m
Dubbed “El Nino”, Fernando Torres was a dreadful name to Premier League defenders and goalkeepers while he was with Liverpool.
He was fast and lethal, scoring 33 league goals in his first season at Anfield. Torres posed to end Chelsea’s “number 9 curse” after joining Chelsea for £50 million from Liverpool in 2011.
However, Spaniard Stricker became a shadow of himself after joining the West London side. He lost his scoring prowess and consistency at Chelsea between 2011 and 2014.
Although the Spaniard scored the famous UCL Semi-final winning goal against Barcelona, he scored just 20 goals in 110 appearances for Chelsea.
Although Torres won major trophies with the Blues, his performance was below expectations compared to his time at Liverpool, which made him the fastest player to score 50 goals for them.
Alexis Sanchez – Arsenal to Manchester United for £30.6m
Alexis Sanchez’s £30.6m swap deal which involved Henrikh Mkhitaryan, was expected to push Jose Mourinho’s Manchester United side to the Premier League title.

Sebastien Haller – Eintracht Frankfurt to West Ham for £45m
In 2019, Sebastien Haller joined West Ham United for a club-record fee of £45 million from Eintracht Frankfurt.
He had a great spell at his previous club, scoring 24 league goals and providing 14 in two seasons. His form attracted interest from premier league clubs during the transfer window before he signed for the London Club.
However, Haller’s time at West Ham wasn’t impressive, as he only scored 10 times and assisted once in 48 appearances over two seasons. Interestingly, he regained his scoring form after joining Ajax, scoring 32 goals and pricing 12 times in 50 outings for Ajax.
