Wally Szczerbiak is an American former professional basketball player and current color analyst for the New York Knicks on MSG Network. He had a 10-year basketball career with for four teams (Minnesota Timberwolves, Boston Celtics, Seattle SuperSonics and the Cleveland Cavaliers) in the National Basketball Association (NBA). Szczerbiak played college basketball for Miami (of Ohio) University, before he was selected the Timberwolves in the first round, 6th overall pick in the 1999 NBA draft. Walter Robert “Wally” Szczerbiak Jr. is the son of Marilyn Szczerbiak and former ABA player Walt Szczerbiak. He was born on March 5, 1977 in Madrid, Spain. His grandparents are Ukrainians who met in a refugee camp in West Germany after World War II.
Szczerbiak spent his earlier childhood in Madrid, at the time his father was playing for Real Madrid. After his father’s retirement, he moved his family to Long Island, New York, United States where he had his high school education.
He attended Cold Spring Harbor High School in Cold Spring Harbor, New York where he played basketball. In the 1994-95 season when he was a senior, Szczerbiak averaged 36.6 points and 15.6 rebounds per game.
Upon graduation, he enrolled at Miami (Ohio) University after already committing to play for Miami of Ohio under coach Herb Sendek. During his first two seasons, Szczerbiak averaged 8.0 and 12.8 points per game, respectively.
Season after season, Szczerbiak bettered his performances on the court. As a junior, he averaged 24.4 points per game and earned a first-team All-MAC honors although he missed several games with a broken right wrist.
Szczerbiak’s professional career began at Minnesota Timberwolves who selected him first round, sixth overall pick in the 1999 NBA draft. He would go on to spent seven seasons, with his best year coming in 2002 after making it to coaches’ selection to the Western Conference All-Star team.
He also played one season each for the Boston Celtics, Seattle SuperSonics and the Cleveland Cavaliers respectively. After three successful left knee surgeries, doctors advised that there was so little cartilage left in the knee for a fourth so he announced his retirement.
