Covington complete his collegiate career with great success throughout all four seasons. Sadly, he was left undrafted in the 2013 NBA draft. He signed a contract with Houston Rockets and was assigned to its affiliate Rio Grande Valley Vipers of the NBA D-League.

His career began to take shape while playing in the NBA D-League. During the 2013-14 season, he averaged 23.2 points and 9.2 rebounds per game that season, earning him the Rookie of the Year in 2014.

Following a successful season, he received a five year deal from the Philadelphia 76ers on 15 November, 2014. He played four season for the 76ers before being traded to the Minnesota Timberwolves in the 2018-19 season.

Covington began the season in fine form before he sustained a knee injury. Overtime, the injury worsened and his stay with the Timberwolves was somewhat a nightmare as he featured in 48 matches throughout the 2019-20 season.

Covington played for the Portland Trail Blazers and the Los Angeles Clippers before making way to his former team Philadelphia 76ers on November 1, 2023 for the the 2023-24 season.
