She then attended the University of Houston Law Center, where she earned her Juris Doctorate in 2009.
After graduating from law school, Jasmine Crockett remained in Texas and worked as a civil rights attorney. She worked as a public defender for Bowie County before starting her own law firm. During the George Floyd protests, Jasmine Crockett and her associates handled the cases of several Black Lives Matter activists on a pro bono basis.
In 2019, after Eric Johnson vacated his seat in the Texas House of Representatives to become mayor of Dallas, a special election was held on November 5 for the remainder of his term and Lorraine Birabil elected win. Jasmine Crockett announced that she would challenge Birabil in the 2020 Democratic primary. She narrowly defeated Birabil in the primary, advancing to the November 2020 general election, which she won unopposed and took office in January 2021.
On November 20, 2021, incumbent U.S. Representative Eddie Bernice Johnson of Texas’s 30th congressional district announced that she would not seek re-election in 2022. Four days later, Jasmine Crockett announced her candidacy for the seat. Johnson simultaneously announced that she was supporting Crockett. Crockett has also received significant financial support from crypto industry-aligned Super PACs, with Sam Bankman-Fried’s Protecting Our Future PAC donating $1 million to support the campaign.
In the Democratic primary, Jasmine Crockett and Jane Hope Hamilton, an assistant to Marc Veasey, advanced to the runoff, which Crockett won. She subsequently won the general election on 8 November. Crockett was selected as the freshman representative to the 118th Congress. Jasmine Crockett was among the 46 Democrats who voted against final passage of the Fiscal Responsibility Act of 2023 in the House.
