Going into the game as underdog, Delbonis pulled a shocker, defeating Federer in two tiebreaker to book a place in the first ATP Tour final of his career. Unfortunately, he lost to Fabio Fognini in the final but entered the top 100 for the first time in his career.

A year later at the 2014 Brasil Open, Delbonis won his first ATP title, defeating Paolo Lorenzi in three sets. Lorenzi who had previously beaten him in three Challenger events, lost at the final, enabling him reach the ranking of No. 44.

Delbonis won several other ITF Futures and ATP Challenger Awards before retiring. His Grand Slam record seemed not so appealing as he failed countlessly to get through the fourth round, in singles and through the third round in doubles.
