Who is Adrian Gonzalez?
Adrián González Savín was born on May 8, 1982 in San Diego, California, United States. He is the youngest child of three boys birthed to David and Alba Gonzalez, both of whom are Mexican natives who emigrated into the United States.
After Gonzalez’s birth, his parents moved to Tijuana, Mexico where his father owned and run an air-conditioner business. All three of the brothers played baseball in Mexico, as their father was a member of the Mexico national baseball team, before returning to the United States in 1990.
Gonzalez attended Eastlake High School in Chula Vista, California. He played baseball and one of the best in his class group as he was drafted first overall pick by the Florida Marlins. Gonzalez became the first infield position player to be drafted first overall since Alex Rodriguez in 1993.
He joined the Marlins and was given a $3 million signing bonus. While with the Marlins, Gonzalez played with the Gulf Coast League Marlins, Kane County Cougars, Utica Blue Sox, Portland Sea Dogs, Albuquerque Isotopes, and Carolina Mudcats.
During his second professional season with the Kane County Cougars, Gonzalez hit a career high .312 with 17 home runs and 103 RBIs in 127 games, earning him the Midwest League’s Most Valuable Player and Prospect of the Year awards as well as playing in the All-Star Futures Game.
Gonzalez suffered a wrist injury while with the Marlins, which prompted the managers of the team to include his name in a June 2003 trade with the Texas Rangers, along with Ryan Snare and Will Smith (minor league) to acquire the services of pitcher Ugueth Urbina.
After his move to the Rangers, Gonzalez was made to join the Class-AA team, the Frisco RoughRiders before making his major league debut against the Seattle Mariners on April 18, 2004. In his first three games, he was hitless in three at bats, before ending his two season career with the Rangers a combined batting average of .229 and 7 homers.
