Aaron Boone, born on March 9, 1973, is an American baseball coach and former quarterback who coached the New York Yankees in Major League Baseball (MLB).
He previously played in the MLB for 13 seasons, from 1997 to 2009. As a player, Aaron Boone is best known for his 2003 campaign with the Yankees, in which he was an All-Star (although he did not play for the Yankees Cincinnati Reds) and picked up the win in the 2003 American League Championship Series at home.
After his playing career ended, Aaron Boone worked as an analyst for ESPN’s Sunday Night Baseball and Tonight’s Baseball from 2010 to 2017. He began coaching the Yankees in 2018 and led the team to two records of 100 wins in the first two seasons. and appeared in the playoffs throughout the year.
Aaron Boone attended Villa Park High School in Villa Park, California. He scored 423 points with 22 stolen bases for his school’s baseball team in his senior year and was named the League of the Century Co-Player of the Year. The California Angels picked Aaron Boone on day three of the 1991 MLB Draft, but he had no intention of signing professionally.
He attended the University of Southern California (USC) and played college baseball for the Trojans. In 1993, he played college summer baseball for the Orleans Cardinals of the Cape Cod Baseball League, where he was named the league’s all-star and helped lead Orleans to the league championship.

In March 2009, Aaron Boone underwent open-heart surgery to replace a mitral aortic valve, a condition he’s known about since he was a child but which routine tests showed had recently gotten worse. Aaron Boone said doctors told him he could play baseball when he recovered, but he wasn’t sure if he would choose to play.
Aaron Boone returned to baseball on August 10, when he began rehabilitation with Corpus Christi Hooks, the Astros’ minor league affiliate Double-A. On February 23, 2010, Boone announced his retirement and would become an analyst for ESPN. Boone appeared on Monday Night Baseball and for Baseball’s Sunday Night Pregnancy Show Tonight.
Aaron Boone called the 2014 and 2015 World Series for ESPN Radio with broadcaster Dan Shulman. He and Jessica Mendoza became black commentators on Sunday Night Baseball with Shulman in 2016. Aaron Boone and Shulman continued to call World Series games for ESPN Radio through 2017.
After the 2017 season, the Yankees decided not to keep Joe Girardi as coach; they hired Aaron Boone to succeed him on December 4, 2017. The Yankees started the 2018 season with a 6-1 win over the Toronto Blue Jays on March 29, 2018. On 2 September 2018, Aaron Boone was given a one-match suspension for unlawful contact with the referee.
He finished his first season with a 100–62 record, finishing second in the American League East, and leading the Yankees to a wild card game against Oakland Athletics, despite losing the star midfielder and teammates. On October 3, 2018, the Yankees defeated the Athletics 7-2 to advance to the American League Division Series, giving Aaron Boone his first playoff win as manager. The Boston Red Sox knocked out the New York Yankees three games in one game in the American League Division Series.
MLB suspended Aaron Boone for one game on May 26, 2023, for his conduct towards umpires after his fourth ejection of the season, and second in four days, the prior day. As of June 9, Aaron Boone has the third-highest ejection rate in MLB history among managers, behind only Paul Richards and Frankie Frisch, and ahead of Earl Weaver, Bobby Cox, and Ron Gardenhire, managers who were all known for their proclivity for getting ejected.
Aaron Boone is the son of former catcher and manager Bob Boone, brother of All-Star and four-time Golden Glove winner Bret Boone, brother of former Cincinnati Reds diver Matt Boone and the grandson of former major jumper Ray Boone. As children, Aaron and Bret spent time at the Phillies Club with the sons of other major players in the league, including Pete Rose Jr. Boone is a descendant of pioneer Daniel Boone.
