In recognition of his contributions to the arts, Lightfoot was awarded several prestigious accolades, such as an honorary Doctor of Laws degree from Trent University, Companion of the Order of Canada, Governor General’s Performing Arts Award, and the Queen Elizabeth II Diamond Jubilee Medal.

His death comes after a decline in his health drastically forcing him to cancel his 2023 tour. His death has been attributed to natural causes.

Gordon Lightfoot has six children from his three marriages and other relationships.

His first marriage was in April 1963 to a Swedish woman named Brita Ingegerd Olaisson. They had two children together, Fred and Ingrid. However, the couple divorced in 1973 due to Lightfoot’s infidelity, which he attributed to the challenges of maintaining a long-distance relationship while touring as a musician.

In the years following his divorce, Lightfoot had two other children from relationships between his first and second marriages: Gaylen McGee and Eric Lightfoot.

In the early 1970s, Lightfoot was involved with Cathy Smith, who inspired his songs “Sundown” and “Rainy Day People” among others. However, their volatile relationship did not last.

In 1989, Lightfoot married Elizabeth Moon, and they had two children together, Miles and Meredith. The couple ultimately divorced in 2011 after a separation that lasted nine years.

Lightfoot wed for a third time on December 19, 2014, at Rosedale United Church to Kim Hasse.
