Who are Dame Sharon White’s Parents? – Dame Sharon White is a distinguished British businesswoman currently serving as the Chair of the John Lewis Partnership.
Born on April 21, 1967, prior to her role at John Lewis, Dame White held various positions in the Civil Service. Notably, she served as the Chief Executive of the British media regulator Ofcom from March 2015 to November 2019 and held the position of Second Permanent Secretary at HM Treasury from 2013 to 2015. A trailblazer, Dame White made history as the first Black person and the second woman to become a Permanent Secretary at the Treasury.

The names of her parents are not known, however, they are from Jamaica. In the 1950s, Dame Sharon White’s parents made a significant journey, leaving their Jamaican homeland to start a new chapter in the United Kingdom. Her father embarked on this life-changing venture at the tender age of 15, while her mother, merely 11 years old, accompanied him on this migration.
Dame Sharon White’s academic journey took her to Fitzwilliam College, Cambridge, where she earned a BA degree in economics. Later, she obtained an MSc in economics from University College London. Her career commenced with work for a church in Birmingham before joining the British civil service in 1989. Over the years, she contributed significantly to various government departments, including roles at the Treasury, the British Embassy in Washington, and positions within the Blair government’s policy unit and the World Bank.
In recognition of her influential role, Dame White has consistently been acknowledged by Powerlist as one of the most powerful Black British individuals. The Voice ranked her as the 7th most powerful black person in Britain in 2014.
In December 2014, she assumed the role of Chief Executive of Ofcom, succeeding Ed Richards. Subsequently, she transitioned to become the Chair of the John Lewis Partnership in February 2020, succeeding Sir Charlie Mayfield. Dame White’s leadership has been marked by accolades, including being appointed Dame Commander of the Order of the British Empire (DBE) in the 2020 New Year Honours for her outstanding public service.
Apart from her roles at John Lewis and Ofcom, Dame White has made significant contributions as a visiting fellow of Nuffield College, University of Oxford, and as a Non-Executive Director of Barratt Developments since January 1, 2018.
