Samuel Lawrence Whitelock born on 12 October 1988, is a New Zealand rugby union player who plays as a lock for the Crusaders in Super Rugby and Canterbury in the Mitre 10 Cup. Sam Whitelock has captained the Crusaders, and New Zealand in five international games.
Sam Whitelock has completed over 100 tests for New Zealand since his debut in 2010, making him the youngest New Zealander to reach 100 tests. Eight years and two months after his Test debut, he became the fastest player to reach 100 caps.
Sam Whitelock w as named New Zealand Rugby Player of the Year in 2017. He formed the famous duo with Brody Retalik. Sam Whiterock and Retalik have played 50 Tests together since 2012. Sam Whitelock was part of the world champion team, the Baby All Blacks, at the 2008 IRB World Junior Championships. He made five appearances and scored a try against Argentina. Sam Whiterock made his Air New Zealand Cup debut for Canterbury against Wellington in 2008 and made his Super Rugby debut for the Crusaders in the 2010 Super 14 season against the Highlanders.
In 2010, he was named to the All Blacks squad for the 2010 Rugby Midterm Test Series. He made his debut from the bench against Ireland as a substitute for Brad Thorne and scored two tries. Sam Whitelock made 10 Test appearances in 2010, has never failed to be drafted by a team since his debut, and made two starts on the year-end tour.
After five appearances leading up to the 2011 World Cup, he was named in New Zealand’s 30-man World Cup squad and started in the second group game against Japan, where he made his debut in 2011 after New Zealand’s 83–7 win. He maintained his position in the squad at the World Cup for the remainder of the World Cup, including the All Blacks’ 8–7 victory over France at Eden Park on 23 October to win the 2011 Rugby World Cup.
Sam Whitelock cemented his place as a regular starter for the All Blacks in 2012, starting 13 of the 14 Tests, but came midway through that year’s 42-10 victory over Italy in Rome. Sam Whitelock scored the fourth try of his Test career in a 32-16 win over South Africa in the Rugby Championship, scoring the first try for the All Blacks 25 minutes into the test.
Sam Whitelock made 100 appearances for the Crusaders in 2016, scoring his first try in an 85-26 victory over the Melbourne Rebels. After missing the first Test against Wales in 2016 due to injury, Sam Whitelock returned for the second Test of the Wales series, performing another 80 minutes.
