Gloria Johnson is an American politician and Democrat of the Tennessee House of Representatives currently representing District 90, formerly District 13, based in Knoxville.
In April 2023, Gloria Johnson and two other state officials faced expulsion from the Tennessee General Assembly after speaking at the State House without admission to protest gun violence. Gloria Johnson was the only one of the three lawmakers not to be expelled.
In 2012, Gloria Johnson was elected to represent District 13 in the Tennessee House of Representatives. She lost her re-election bid to Eddie Smith in 2014. After a failed bid in 2016, Gloria Johnson defeated Smith in 2018.
She was re-elected in 2020. Following the redistricting, Gloria Johnson’s residence was in District 15, where there was already a Democratic incumbent. Because of this, Gloria Johnson moved to District 90 and won the seat in 2022.
In January 2021, Gloria Johnson was assigned a small, windowless meeting room to use as an office in the Cordell Hull State Office Building. Gloria Johnson disagreed with the room given to her, arguing that her mission was to get revenge on Speaker of the House Cameron Sexton after she was the only representative to abstain from voting for Sexton in the presidential election.
Instead, Gloria Johnson moved her office to the outside hallway and gave up the bedroom to her assistant, who was initially given a walk-in closet for her office.
During a legislative session three days after the 2023 Covenant School shootings, Gloria Johnson and Democrats Justin Jones and Justin Pearson led a protest against gun control in the House of Representatives. The protest violated the rules of the room decoration because the three members were not allowed to speak or use loudspeakers.
Subsequently, House leaders stripped Gloria Johnson and Jones of their committee duties (Pearson did not serve on any committee) and resolutions to expel the three were drawn up. In an interview with Mother Jones the day before the expulsion vote, Gloria Johnson accused House Republicans of fascism and said she thought Tennessee was less democratic than North Korea. Jones and Pearson were eliminated while Gloria Johnson avoided deportation by just one vote.
In late July 2023, it was announced that Gloria Johnson would launch a campaign next month to challenge Senator Marsha Blackburn in the 2024 election. In early August, Gloria Johnson formed an exploratory committee to run for the Senate. On September 5, she officially launched her campaign for the Senate.
