Who is Carrie Underwood?
Carrie Marie Underwood was born on March 10, 1983, in a small country town in Checotah, Oklahoma to Carole Underwood and Stephen Underwood. Her father worked at a papermill while her mother taught at an elementary school. She and her sisters, Shanna Underwood Means and Stephanie U. Shelton were raised on her parent’s farm.
At age three, Carrie developed the passion for singing, and she began singing at her local church, First Free Will Baptist Church. As a child, Carrie performed at Robbins Memorial Talent Show and later sang for local events in Checotah, including Old Settler’s Day and the Lions Club. During such performances in her childhood, she realized her talent would move mountains for her.
Underwood’s childhood town wasn’t full of glitz and glamour, but as she explained in her book “Find Your Path,” it was full of “wide-open spaces, pastures, and woods here and there, family farms and decent people.”
Not only was she passionate about singing from an early age, but she also loved animals, sports, and being outdoors exploring with her friends. She loved performing at her local church and events in Checotah, Oklahoma, which brought her to her audition at Capitol Records.
Her contract was ready but unfortunately got canceled because of a management change at the label. In the same year, 2004, not only did she graduate from Northeastern State University, but she also had her career breakthrough audition, American Idol season four.
In May 2005, she received two awards, including being Simon Cowell’s ultimate favorite and, of course, being crowned as the American Idol winner of season four. After winning American Idol, Underwood released her debut album and won two awards at the 40th Annual Country Music Awards, followed by five awards at the Billboard Music Awards in December 2005. In 2008 Underwood met her husband and her children’s father, Mike Fisher, a National Hockey League star. Mike popped the question only a year later, in 2009, and they married in 2010.
