During his second professional season with the Kane County Cougars, Gonzalez hit a career high .312 with 17 home runs and 103 RBIs in 127 games, earning him the Midwest League’s Most Valuable Player and Prospect of the Year awards as well as playing in the All-Star Futures Game.

Gonzalez suffered a wrist injury while with the Marlins, which prompted the managers of the team to include his name in a June 2003 trade with the Texas Rangers, along with Ryan Snare and Will Smith (minor league) to acquire the services of pitcher Ugueth Urbina.

After his move to the Rangers, Gonzalez was made to join the Class-AA team, the Frisco RoughRiders before making his major league debut against the Seattle Mariners on April 18, 2004. In his first three games, he was hitless in three at bats, before ending his two season career with the Rangers a combined batting average of .229 and 7 homers.
