A Special Trade in Pokemon GO is more than just a standard trade, as it involves exchanging rarer Pokemon in the game. This includes:
- Shiny Pokemon
- Legendary Pokemon
- Pokemon not registered in your Pokedex
- Alternate forms including costumed Pokemon
So, if you’re yet to register a Mewtwo in your Pokedex, need a Shiny Gyarados for your collection, or just want a Pikachu wearing a funky hat, then these would all constitute a Special Trade in Pokemon Go.

Now that you know what a Special Trade is in Pokémon GO, you’re going to need to know how to do it, so here’s the step-by-step breakdown:
- Find a friend and increase your friendship level with them (this can be done by exchanging gifts or taking part in Raid Battles together)
- Ensure that you are both Level 10 or above
- Use online functions or meet up with your friend to start the trade in the Trade section (as above)
- Select the Pokémon you wish to trade, and let the exchange begin
Trading in general will cost you Stardust, but Special Trades in particular can be very expensive. If you want to trade a Legendary that your friend doesn’t have in their Pokedex, for example, it could cost you up to one million Stardust. You can reduce this cost by increasing your friendship level.
You will also only be able to Special Trade once per day. However, during certain events like the annual Pokémon GO Fest, this restriction is occasionally relaxed, so be sure to keep an eye out for any events where you can make multiple Special Trades in a single day.
