On November 20, 2012, at about 7 p.m. AST, Hector Macho Camacho was shot in the jaw while sitting in a car on Puerto Rico Highway 167 near Bayamón. Camacho, 50, was sitting in the passenger seat of a friend’s Ford Mustang when he was shot by unidentified individuals in a passing SUV. The strike murdered the car’s driver, Adrian Mojica Moreno, a boyhood friend of Camacho.
Camacho was transported to San Pablo Hospital in Bayamón, where he was reported to be in critical condition. After a chase, police located the car that fired the rounds in the Jardines de Cataño area.
There were conflicting media accounts, including an initial assertion that police arrested a suspect about 9 p.m. AST. Police investigating the incident discovered nine sachets of cocaine in the car.
The bullet entered Camacho’s left jaw, broke his fifth and sixth cervical vertebrae, lodged in his right shoulder, and formed a lesion on his carotid artery, reducing blood flow to his brain. Camacho was initially anticipated to survive but may be paralyzed, but following a heart arrest during the night, medics discovered only minimal brain activity.
After the incident, the Medical Sciences Campus director, Rafael Rodríguez Mercado, informed El Nuevo Día that Camacho had died from a brain stem injury. Rodríguez Mercado remarked that his entire recovery would be a miracle, as there is no further medical treatment available. This was confirmed the next morning by the hospital’s director, Ernesto Torres.
Meanwhile, Hector Macho Camacho was born on May 24, 1962, in Bayamon, Puerto Rico, but his family relocated to Spanish Harlem, New York, when he was a small child. Camacho was always in trouble as a teenager, but he eventually turned to boxing and karate as an outlet.
Macho won the New York Golden Gloves Flyweight Sub-Novice Championship in 1978 while still an amateur. He also claimed the New York Golden Gloves Bantamweight Open Championships in 1979 and 1980.
In 1979, he was named the Intercity Golden Gloves 119-Pound Champion, and in 1980, the Intercity Golden Gloves 125-Pound Champion. Hector turned professional after 100 fights, 96 victories, and four losses.
